TBT: Mission District News and the ‘famous’ Mission Merchant Stamp

You may have seen Capp Street Crap’s profile yesterday of Marian’s, the old school boutique that’s been in business near the corner of 16th and Mission streets for 64 years. Turns out that owners Joe Anker and Andy Thompson have some pretty cool Mission memorabilia stashed away in their store. Though they didn’t know too much about the paper’s history, pictured above is a June 17, 1976 copy of the Mission District News. Check out those ads and photos!

The publisher of the paper also operated the Mission Merchants Stamp Co. Shoppers would collect stamps for patronizing Mission District business and ultimately get a discount.

To see more of the paper and stamp book, including the names of business that used to line Mission Street, check out the slideshow below, which has an old photo from La Taqueria among other things. Also, keep an eye out for Sandy Kumar and his “flarejean,” my personal favorite.
