Someone’s in The Corner

Three years after The Corner restaurant shut down, a new wine bar is finally moving into the long vacant space.

L’Emigrant, immigrant in Italian, will open at 18th and Mission streets by the end of the month, according to owner Irfan Yalcin who describes it as “the city’s most affordable wine bar.”

Yalcin, who was busy directing crews as they carried in supplies and worked on the interior of the bar Thursday, said roughly 80 percent of wines L’Emigrant will feature will be $30 a bottle and under. The bar will also have eight beers on tap as well as sandwiches, salads and a few of the dishes from Pera, Yalcin’s Mediterranean restaurant in Potrero Hill.

Yalcin told me he plans to keep a least some of the cool décor from The Corner, which shut down then operated briefly as a pop-up venue before closing for good in 2011.
