Elbo Room set to close this fall

April 23, 2015

As much as San Francisco music fans were hoping for an intervention, sadly it looks like the Elbo Room will shut its doors by the beginning of November to make way for a condo project.  According to SFGate, which cites a letter on the Mission venue’s Facebook page, the building’s owners decided not renew the club’s lease expiring Nov. 1.

Here’s the text of the letter:

Here is the latest news on Elbo Room. It’s not what any of us wanted to hear and it did look like the lease would be renewed past November at first. Elbo is much more than just a venue. It’s where Dub Mission started more than 18 and a half years ago. We consider it home. Matt Shapiro, Erik Cantu, and the club’s supportive staff are all part of the reason for Dub Mission’s longevity and success. Dub Mission WILL continue at the club until its lease runs out in November and we’re very happy to hear that they’re committed to finding a new spot. If you have any ideas (it doesn’t have to be a bar/club, it can just be a great spot), please contact mattshapiro@mac.com
Long live Elbo Room!
Official Statement about the future of Elbo Room
Hey Everyone
There is finally news.
Dennis and Susan Ring had a meeting with the powers that be and they seem quite confident that their condo project will be able to move forward.
As a result, they have decided not to renew our lease which expires Nov. 1st, 2015.
Yes, we are in shock.
What’s next?
We will be looking for a new space to continue what we are doing. With hopefully as little lapse as possible.
We own the liquor license, the business and all contents inside (except for pinball/pacman).
Hopefully we can find something soon.
If you have any leads on a space for us, or wish to help… please email mattshapiro@mac.com
Thank You for your ongoing support

BREAKING: The Elbo Room is sticking around for two more years

Was just alerted to this Facebook post by Elbo Room owner Matt Shapiro. Will update this post as more information becomes available.

Good news music lovers, Elbo Room will stick around — for a few more months at least

Slated to be replaced with condos, the Elbo Room was supposed to be closing around the beginning of November. Now it looks like the Mission bar and club has been granted a bit more time. In a Facebook post today, owner Matt Shapiro wrote that the venue will stay put at least until the end of the year with monthly options in 2016.

I’ve reached out to Shapiro to find out more and will update this post as more information becomes available. In the meantime, here’s what he wrote.

Plans in the works for furniture store that closed forever ago

August 12, 2015

Boarded up as long as most people can remember, the former furniture store on Valencia near Sycamore Street is poised to be replaced with a five-story, mostly residential building.

Earlier this week, neighbors of 657 Valencia St. received notices inviting them to a pre-application meeting on Aug. 24 to discuss the project. According to Planning Department records, the property owner wants to knock down the one-story retail building and replace it with a 55-foot tall structure with a restaurant and lobby on the first floor and four, two-bedroom residential units above.

While the plan is in the very early stages, planning department spokeswoman Candace SooHoo said the project sponsor met with a city planner earlier this year to get initial feedback and discuss any issues that might come up.

Capp Street Crap was unable to reach the contact listed on the notice to find out more about the project, however, it looks as though the proposed building is intended to be similar in height to the condo project that’s planned to replace the Elbo Room next door.

If all goes as planned with both projects, that block of Valencia Street will be looking very different in the next couple of years.
